PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
APRIL 2009
Dear
Fellow Members,
Our March IT
Day held at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, “An Introduction to IT Audit” was an all-day
course that provided what auditors needed to know when tackling IT audits. The course was well attended by both dedicated
IT auditors and other auditors that perform IT-related audits. The resources provided at the conference
enhanced the training that was received at this event. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend and
earn 8 CPEs!
From The IIA, Global Technology Audit Guides (GTAGs) are a leading
resource for internal auditors who want to become more knowledgeable about the
risks, controls, and governance issues surrounding technology. The new GTAG 12: Auditing IT Projects
guidance is now available. With potential
impact so high for an organization’s IT projects, failure is not an option.
Rather than watch from the sidelines, internal auditors can add significant
value to a project by engaging early and supporting the project team throughout
the project life cycle. The purpose of Auditing
IT Projects is to provide chief audit executives an overview of effective
management of IT projects. Among other important aspects, this guide covers:
How to outline a framework for assessing project related risks, examples of
common project management risks, top 10 reasons for project success, and five
key focus areas for project audits. This guide also includes sample questions
for reviewing IT projects. GTAG guidance
is FREE for IIA members and is $25 for
nonmembers. They are available for download on The IIA's Web site: http://www.theiia.org/go?to=GTAG12_IT-Projects.
The 2009 Williamsburg Fraud Conference, the ever-popular conference is
fast approaching and will held on April 30 – May 1, 2009 at the Williamsburg
Hospitality House. There is a great
line-up of speakers and topics as usual, and we hope to reach maximum
attendance again this year. For those
interested in the fraud conference, I encourage registration as soon as
possible as we are filling seats quickly.
Additional hotel information and a brochure can be obtained at our
website www.iiatidewater.org that
also offers more information and details, and registration is currently going
on.
We are finalizing the details for our May social event, which will be a night out at the ballgame for members and their families at Harbor Park in Norfolk. It will be on Friday, May 22, 2009 at 7:15pm and registration will be available soon. We will also take this special time to recognize all of our volunteers that have made the Tidewater Chapter a success again for the 2008 –2009 chapter year. This event is a great time to socialize and network with your peers at the ballpark!
I hope everyone is enjoying Spring and I look forward to seeing everyone at the Fraud conference at the end of the month.
Sincerely,
Brenda
